AI for sustainable rice: how artificial intelligence can lower barriers to access carbon finance
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to expand access to carbon markets by automating complex tasks such as acreage verification, drainage practice analysis, and field stratification. AI can also help revolutionise sustainable agriculture, enabling more effective climate action and promoting greater participation in carbon markets.
Our BPP Carbon Markets partnership between Gold Standard, IRRI and the Australian Government that aims to scale carbon market access for sustainable rice producers in Vietnam has launched a new report that explores how AI could significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of sustainable rice projects. You can find the report here.
The report, produced by Mantle Labs, a leading UK-based remote sensing and AI technology company, highlights how AI and remote sensing technologies can achieve an order of magnitude higher accuracy in monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) processes. This can drastically reduce costs and increase scalability for projects, demonstrated by a case study from the Mekong Delta’s Dong Thap Province.
“Moving towards sustainable rice cultivation is critical for the climate, and provides new opportunities for sustainable development”, said Margaret Kim, CEO of Gold Standard. “This report lays out how novel technologies could be used to accelerate this shift”.
“AI and remote sensing are revolutionizing sustainable agriculture, making carbon accounting more accurate and accessible,” said Jon Pierre, CEO of Mantle Labs. “This report highlights the transformative impact these technologies can have on scaling sustainable rice projects globally.”

Gold Standard and Mantle Labs are hosting a webinar on 19 September about the report for attendees to:
- Learn more about AI for carbon markets
- Understand how it can be used for sustainable rice activities
- See the results of a real-world demonstration.
