Solomon Islands’ remote Good Samaritan Hospital powers ahead with 24/7 solar energy

Dr Lucas de Toca, Australia’s Ambassador for Global Health, recently visited Good Samaritan Hospital in Solomon Islands to see firsthand the incredible impact of the new solar hybrid system now powering the hospital with clean, reliable energy 24/7.

Launched just six months ago, the solar system is already making a huge difference by providing reliable, green energy to support critical healthcare services for over 60,000 people, including emergency services and nighttime deliveries.

It’s also saving the hospital more than SBD$190,000 (AUD$36,000) a year in energy costs, freeing up considerable funds to reinvest in improving healthcare services to better support local families, all while enjoying 24/7 energy. By significantly reducing the hospital’s reliance on diesel, it’s also helping to lower pollution and enable a cleaner, more sustainable environment for the local community.

The system was made possible through an Off-Grid Renewable Energy Partnership between Superfly Limited, Good Samaritan Hospital and the Australian Government. These partnerships are part of the Australian Government’s Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP) initiative to expand the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific’s (AIFFP) climate investments.

Through AIFFP, the Australian Government has recently launched the first grant round for REnew Pacific, a new $75 million long-term off-grid renewable energy program to support communities like this one across the region, to mitigate, adapt and build resilience against climate change.
